Hi,
will go to Cebu / Malapascua next february,
and wonder what lens to add...
Using a OMD 5 in a Nauticam housing, have the Pana 8mm but think about buying the new Oly 8mm...
Or the 7 - 14mm.... Which one would be better for the trip? The 12 - 50mm and the 60mm i own as well.
We have a very short stop ( 2 hours ) on Hongkong airport, so my question is, makes it sense to buy a lens there?
Or are the shops as expensive as anythere?
Here in austria the lenses are very expensive, so it could make sense.
Thanks for your input,
Wolfgang

You should have a great trip! I was in Malapascua in March and we saw lots of threshers every morning. I also have an E-M5 and used the 12-50 lens. I found it to be a good choice, as sometimes the sharks are not very close so the ability to zoom in a bit was welcome. Of course if you get really lucky with a very close encounter, the wider lenses could produce great results, but a lot of the time they may be too far away. Remember also that you can't use strobes on the shark dives, and you get in the water at sunrise, so the f1.8 aperture on the 8 FE and the f2.8 aperture on the 7-14 do give an important advantage. If I was buying a new lens for that site, I would take the 7-14 zoom over the 8 FE, but honestly when I go back I will stick with the 12-50 zoom.
As for shopping at HKG, don't get your hopes up. There are no dedicated camera stores, only electronics stores, with a few popular kits. I don't remember seeing individual lenses for sale, or anything particularly high end, so would not expect to find either of those Olympus lenses there. Prices tend to be roughly in line with manufacturer's suggested retail, that is, no discounts.
If you can change your schedule, the airport train will take you into Central in 45 minutes. You could get through immigration and do a round trip and be back through immigration in three hours safely. There are some really good and knowledgeable camera stores on Stanley Street that will negotiate a bargain. I have bought stuff at Tin Cheung and been very happy with them. There are even better deals on the Mongkok side but that would take a half day outing at least.

Hi,
thanks for your infos.
The 8mm FE was the idea because i thought it could be a light problem early morning.
But the info with no strobes helps a lot, means i will take my pair of Inon D2000 instead the S&S 250, and thats a lot of weight ;-))
Not sure if i will do the trip in the city, we changed a lot since we are planing the trip...
Regards,
Wolfgang
