Lionfish in Cayman?

4 posts
  1. For the last few years, I have seen the Lionfish infestation devastate the fish and ecological systems in the Caribbean.

They were trying to teach sharks and groupers to eat them in the Turks and Caicos. One great solution!

I'm probably expecting too much, but can anyone tell me if they have impacted the fish systems in the Cayman islands? I am so looking forward to a photo shoot there and hope to see the plethora of fish and healthy reef that I had enjoyed a few years back.

GREAT board folks! VERY well done and thanks to all in advance!

  2. I just returned from Cayman Brac last month and the lionfish were certainly in evidence on most dives. And the dive guides went after them frequently. I would have to defer to the local dive shops as to the fish's impact. Give Reef Divers a call or email.

  3. My wife and I frequently dive Grand Cayman and Lion Fish are a problem. They just had a tournament in March with a huge cull. Their are restaurants offering lion fish on their menu. Dive Tech offers a course in lion fish harvesting.

Grand Cayman has other challenges like over fishing of the reef fish like grouper, parrot and red snapper.

Still a beautiful place to dive.

If you want a great place to stay and dive, check out Sunset House just south of George Town.

  4. Big thanks Damselfish. We will be on the Cayman Aggressor. Long time since we've been there and on that boat!
