single vs dual video lights?

11 posts
  1. The new generation of video lights are incredibly powerful and compact. I now see lights that easily fit on a mirrorless housing that put out 12,000 lumens. I do both photo and video on the same dive and am often switching back and forth. I am in the market for new video lighting.

My question is this, what is the advantage versus disadvantage of dual versus a single video light? Am I better off getting two 7000 lumen lights to go on my arms (dual clamped with my strobes) or one moderately larger 12000 light on the coldshoe mount of my housing?

  2. I don't shoot much video but I would think about light in the same way as for stills. A single light right on top of the housing is more likely to produce hard shadows and backscatter. Dual lights on arms allow a lot of scope for adjustment and a balance between primary and fill (assuming the output is adjustable) to shape the light.

  3. You don't really need light most of the time unless when you go deep, or cave diving. For day time shooting, use custom white balance. When come to purchase light, the price and battery life does affect your decision making.

Personally I have 2 lights, one is 2000 lumen, and another one is 2500 lumen. I mainly use light for night dive, so having 2 lights automatically give me a back up situation in case one light goes out. When come to night dive, I like to keep one light on with red light (it doesn't use much battery), and turn the other light off. This will let me swim around with stealth mode and don't get annoy by those "fly" that attract to light. When I see something I want to shoot, then I turn on the other light.

I know a diver who uses two 8000 lumen light, each one cost $1000+, not many people have that kind of budget for light. :D

  4. Better 2 video lights to minimice de backscatter. Now I have 2 of 6000 lumen and waiting for 2 of 15000.... verdad Antoñito.
