Purchased the thruster for a liveaboard trip to the Red Sea, and this is generally my thoughts about it.
Likes:
1. Ships in a Pelican hard case, well organized in customized foam insert for the motor, 2 batteries, charger and wires/cables, and yes it ships with two batteries.
2. Aside from the case, the thruster itself is lightweight, easy to transport, maintain and store aboard a vessel.
3. Speed underwater was more than enough, 50 meters per minute, and had no problem going against strong currents with my bulky and heavy UW DSLR housing.
4. Beside the fun of operating it underwater with a sensation of flying or swimming like a dolphin, shooting video is especially more fun for a smooth motion shooting without the shake caused by kicking the fins.
5. Battery life is super good. Three full dives with one battery weren’t a problem at all and I could easily do the 4h, probably because I frequently stop to take photos. In addition, charging time was very reasonable.
Dislikes:
1. Not travel friendly if weight is a concern. The thruster with the case weigh18.6 KG, added to my diving gear bag, underwater photography bag, clothing bag, made me end up paying substantial extra weight fee to all airliners outbound/inbound for the trip.
2. The switch cable is too long and has no option or adapter to mount it to an UW housing grip, so holding the switch and the camera grip in one hand for motion video shooting is totally uncomfortable. I emailed Pegasus suggesting a simple adapter for this purpose, well didn’t even receive a thank you reply. Another side dislike ![]()
3. Difficult to use with a two strap BCD or wing, as the thruster is tank mounted on the second lower strap position, Hollis wing in my case, so I ended up using another single strap BCD.
4. There is not any guide as to where you should mount the thruster, so you have to experiment with its placement during the first dives because it will either push you upward or inward while operating it depending on the thruster position on the tank, and it did took me a while to find the sweet spot.
5. Does not have any warning light or indication that shows battery level, or when it requires charging, so it’s all about guessing. A Single red or orange LED light will do it.
Conclusion:
Despite the dislikes and the thruster requirement of fine tuning in design and engineering, I did enjoy overall using the thruster underwater, it was a great experience that I would love to repeat in every dive, but the weight issue is my biggest concern that will limit my usage of the thruster since all of my dives require air travel to international destinations. Using another lightweight bag could be an alternative to the Pelican heavy case, but that might risk the storage safety of the thruster and its components in transit, that I would not like to take since the bag must be checked in and not carried on in all cases.
