  1. new 17-55 nikon -- in Subal dome & thoughts re u/w?

Search function didn't yield much on this -- looking at this lens for topside events, and am wondering -- has anyone here actually tried it u/w on a D70, D100, or Fuji S2?

Also am trying to find out if it would work in a Subal dome port or not, if it has the same functionality as the 17-35 in the FE2. I've already tried emailing Subal.

My situation: Am loving my Subal-housed S2-mounted 60mm but some situations have been crying out for wider angle; I also know folks praise their 12-24DX -- but I think the 17-55 would be a little more versatile for my topside purposes, it would be nice if the same lens would work well u/w as well, and is readily housable -- or not, as the case may be.

Thanks to anyone who can enlighten.

    Gloria

  2. I've used the 17-35 in my Subal with the 9" dome. Works well; but if you are use to a Nikonos 15 or the 17-35 with a 35mm camera you will miss the wider angle of coverage. I found I liked the 12-24 much better. The long end doesn't seem to give you enough magnification to compete with the 60 mm.

Get the 17-55 for topside but don't count on it as your wide angle lens.

  3. I second that. the 17mm will have the angle of view of a 28mm lens (film equivalent). That is not wideangle, in my opinion. It will be a "mid-range" zoom lens which will be nice topside, but not much good for anything but fish ID shots underwater, IMO.

I would get the 12-24DX instead.

    Cheers
