Looking for a fast wide angle lens for Nikon DX

6 posts
  1. Hi,
i am looking for a fast DX wide angle lens.
Reason: shooting without strobe / lights, because not allowed, thresher sharks in Malapascua

Last year i used a Oly OMD5e with a 12mm f2 lens, but it was too dark for nice shoots. Look grainy Iso 640, f2,

For all the other types of underwater photography the OMD5e was fine, no question!

Next spring it will be a D500 ;-))
    I own a Tokina 10 - 17mm, a Sigma 14mm f2,8 and a Sigma 18 - 35 f 1,8.
The Sigma zoom is fast, but not really wide enough, the Tokina is wide but not fast enough, the Sigma prime is somethere in the middle...

Are there any other lenses i have been missing, that are worth looking?

    Regards,
    Wolfgang

  2. Nikkor 10.5mm FE f2.8

    Regards Mark

  3. Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 if you want rectangular.

    Regards Mark

  4. Hi Mark,
i was thinking about the 15mm Sigma or 16mm Nikon FE.
10mm FE could be to wide there...
The 12mm Olympus is like a 24mm FX.

This tokina lens i have seen, but is it good?
The 12 - 24mm lenses are too slow.

    Regards,
    Wolfgang

  5. Honestly Wolfgang I would be waiting until you get your D500 body before buying new lenses as the D500 has very good high ISO performance (might work well with the Tokina 10-17mm). I had a quick look and the Olympus 12mm f2 which has an AOV of 84° which is the same as the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 @ 16mm. So if you do want a wide angle rectangular DX lens with great performance with the same angle of view as your Olympus 12mm the Tokina 11-16mm would be worth looking at. I have the lens which I mainly use for landscapes and its a simply a great lens for that purpose. I tried it underwater a few weeks ago and was very impressed with its performace but at the end of the day it wasnt wide enough for my style of shooting but it might suit yours much more as you need that extra reach so to speak.

    Regards Mark

  6. Hi Mark,
    i had a D500, was stolen today....
    With Sigma 18 - 35mm F 1,8 and the Sigma 105mm macro....
So i have now a little different problem...
The 12mm Oly was ok, because it was the fastes lens i could get for that job.
A bit wider would be great. So i was affraid that the 18 - 35mm could be not wide enought.
Had that combi rented for a wedding and was surprised!wshark5.jpg

By the moment, i first need a new body, and then we will see...
Means my housing test next weekend and the 1st of november will not work....

    Regards,
    Wolfgang
