Land based diving at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

  1. Hi all,

I'm considering some land base diving around Cabo San Lucas area for 3 to 5 days. Does anyone have good suggestion in term of dive operator and destination? From my brief research, people suggest "Pelican Rock" and "Land's End", which I don't know what the highlight is. Manta Scuba seems to be a popular dive operator, any other suggestion?

    Thanks!

  2. I did some dives there back in 1994 before heading out to the Revillagigedo Islands on the Baja Treasure. I recall boarding diving skiffs right in the CSL harbor for the local dives. As well the operator did a day trip using their van up to Cabo Pulmo. There was a lot of current on the first Pulmo dive so that many did not do the second one which had no current. All this was quite a while ago. I do not recall the diver operator. I shot my underwater photos on that trip with a Nikonos RS and film!

  3. Thanks Thomas, I think Cabo Pulmo is a good place to dive since it's a marine national park. I read that Cabo San Lucas is closer to the Sea of Cortez, specifically the Gordon Bank, so now I'm torn.

They are both on the Sea of Cortez/Gulf of California at the southern end of Baja. I found a map with Pulmo circled:

Looks like about the same distance to either from the airport. Gordo Banks is offshore of Punta Gordo about halfway between them. See http://www.mexfish.com/baja/baja/cabosmp/cabosmp.htm

  5. Gordo banks is very deep and way off shore.

We saw a blue marlin up close so it was worth it. If we had not seen it, it would have been a waste of a day and money.

I've done day dives around Cabo. I would waste my time.

I've heard and seen slide show from Cabo Puma, and it looks like it may be worth diving. Note it is not the only coal reef in the Sea of Cortez. There is a nice one you dive out of LaPaz.

La Paz is where you want to go diving. There is a nice packed highway there from Cabo. Takes maybe 2 hours to drive to.

  6. Thanks Dave! I looked into La Paz, seems like a great place to dive! Anyway suggestion on dive shop/operator to use? I'm hoping to do 3-4 days of diving. I will fly into San Jose Del Cabo airport, what would be the best way to get to La Paz?

  7. We always used Baja Expeditions,

Not sure if they still run dive boats.

The coral reef out of LaPaz is Swanee reef. You also want to do Los Islotes, there you can see sealions

  8. Thanks Dave, sealions would be great! I never swim with them, so it would be a treat if I video them. The information you provided will be very helpful and I appreciated it!

  9. I will go to los Cabos in February. Is it still good to dive in Cabo Pulmo nowadays?

  10. I'm not sure, I ended book my trip to La Paz. Many good review about diving in that area. Some dive operators offer "Eco Camp" as well, where you can stay in a remote island camping, and have opportunity to do night dive and star gazing.
