Will TTL still work with 1/64 Built In Strobe?

6 posts
  1. Hi, I'm using Olympus E-PL6. I am just wondering if the External UW Strobes like INON Z240, D2000, S-2000, S&S YS-D1, YS-D2, YS-01 still able to fire correctly with TTL when I set my camera flash to lowest power(1/64) to save power and reduce shutter lag due to charging the built in flash.

Or I would have to stick to "Fill in" mode in order for the UW Srobes to fire with the correct TTL power.

Also, should I switch the trigger mode to RC mode?

    thanks.

  2. Ttl mimics the on camera flash, so no.

  3. I've got more or less the same setup (E-PL5, Z-240, D-2000). There are two possible options for you on the Inon strobes. Well, three:

    0) Shoot manual

    1) Use the E-TTL in which the strobe itself does the exposure. I've never tried this

    2) See if, using the right setting of the magnet switch, you can boost the power of the pre-flash so that the main flash does not suck much out of the camera (this means setting the camera and strobe to TTL)

    2) is incompatible with 0) which is why I don't use it.

BTW, you're not going to reduce "shutter lag" per se, but you can get the camera to fire more frequently with the 1/64th setting. However, you'd probably still end up with 2/3 of the frames dark since the external strobe won't be able to cycle as fast as the camera strobe (unless you are using very little power).

    ok. noted amd thanks.

Okay. what i was trying to say is when u use fill in(TTL) the camera will not shoot when the built in flash is recharging. So, it feels like shutter lag. Or should i call it charge lag.

I'm not so worry about macro shot and wide angle landscape. I'm just worry about the large moving subject like sharks, turtles etc when dealing with wide angle shot with strobes.

    thanks anyway for your response.

  5. Hi Timz,

usually my internal strobe which is powered by the camera needs more time to recharge than external strobe. When using Manual flash mode, I'm able to turn down the power of internal strobe to shorten the recharge time, but I have to manually set flash power of external strobe. I think that when you're setting internal flash power to "1/64" then you're enabling Manual flash mode of your camera (so disabling TTL).

When using "Fill-in flash" you're enabling TTL and force camera to use flash during every shot, but you can't adjust the internal flash power then.

I understand that you would like to shorten recharge time of internal strobe and save some camera battery and still be able to use TTL for automatic flash power setting. You can't adjust internal strobe, so that seems not possible, but...

There is a "flash intensity control" in camera, and "EV Control Switch" in Inon strobes. I wonder what would be the result of setting eg.:

Camera Flash intensity control to - 3 EV

Inon Strobe EV Control Switch to + 3 EV

that sounds interesting. Will try once i buy my strobe.
