Does anyone have any experience with air-filled vs. normal dome diffusers? Are they better (and how so?) and worth the price? I guess they don't reduce the light output as much as regular diffusers.
ooo that's something new! have not seen an air one before....curious as well, as this would perfectly double as buoyancy aid for the rig
From what I can understand of Hong Kong retailers description, the main differentiators are buoyancy and less reduction in flash intensity. Can't be sure there's much difference in beam angle, beam softness, or uniformity of beam compared to regular dome diffusers. Hoping someone will publish a review/comparison before long.
These have the same effect (in reverse?) as dome vs flat ports. The stock strobe window acts like a flat port which narrows the beam angle underwater by about 30%. The air-filled diffuser works like a dome port, which restores the beam angle to what it would be in air.
I haven't tried them yet, but I may on our next trip.
I'm confused. The specs of the air filled diffuser that is almost clear say -1 EV. The specs of a milky water filled one day minus 2/3 EV. Someone's specs must be off.

I have bought one for a test in the pool ... but it is now on hold in customs ..
I will do a setup with the Inon z240 and post a reply and pics.

will await your news...as kinda tempted to get these if they are really an improvement over the normal ones
Just noticed it also says on these:
"It can be used with INON color temperature (4600K/4900K) conversion filter"
Hmm double diffuser? How will that work ?
My opinion .. the air filled diffuser is the widest and softer, no loss of strobe light.
Pics are not edited!

Dear Hedwig, thanks for sharing your test results. How about user-friendliness of this air-filled diffuser? Does it attach easily to your Z240 and maintain a good air seal?
the air filled dome is seperate filled with air and sealed. There is a gap from 3mm between the strobe and diffuser that is filled with water. installing the diffuser is very easy and stable ... fixation with 4 screws in pvc.

WOW ! Thx for the test and the sharing...I just saw it now
I is very interesting to see a comparison, also to white Dome diffuser.... how will the light spread
Did you check this too or know about a test like this ?
great comparison - thanks for the effort!
air diffuser really looks brighter...but is it me or one can see the "cross ribs" i.e. as inon flash tubes are arranged in a T shape?
yes ... you can see the T shape without diffuser ... thats why i like strobes with ring flash tubes

hah but its also visible with the air diffuser a bit...hmm undecided, it does look brighter but also a bit uneven, especially on the side shots.
The quality of the soft light from the dome diffuser is beautiful - something that would get portrait photographers excited.
It also has a much better spread and it appears a higher color temperature than the flat diffuser.
Thanks for this owfotograaf, it will come in handy in the future.
What did it do for the buoyancy of the strobe? Does the strobe want to tilt up in the front?
