adding a second strobe

6 posts
  1. I have a Sony NEX-5N in a 10Bar housing and single Inon Z-240 strobe and a mounted LED light. I almost always use the strobe in the TTL mode. I am considering adding an Inon S-2000 S-TTL as a second strobe with the Z-240. However, I have read that the timing of the S-2000 is faster than the Z-240. Will this result in problems?

  2. I prefer shooting matched strobes, because of the consistency of the light output.

On the other hand, having one stronger and on weaker strobe can also allow you to have nice / unique lighting effects. I would normally achieve that by turning down the matched strobes to a lower power setting or by aiming one strobe further out to barely provide edge covering.

  3. Hmmm, yeah, my preference too would be to go for matched strobes.

Why go for an unmatched pair, rwe?

I was just trying to keep the bulk down a little; both for traveling and underwater. I tried using a Nikonos 105 paired with the Z-240 some years back when I first switched to digital and decided that my diving enjoyment was significantly less carrying that much around underwater (in TTL the slower 105 also tended to overexpose pretty often). But my present system is smaller so the difference between a Z-240 and S-2000 may not be that much.

the difference in recharge time will only be noticeable when u do continuous shot with full strobe..

Z-240 and S-2000 can work in a pair, both in TTL. Yes, discharge curves of those strobes are different, because of different xenon tubes and main capacitors. But difference is not so significant at the beginning of the curve. You will have to use +/- Ev dial switch (about -0.3..-1 Ev) on one strobe to balance lighting.

But certainly more easy to use a pair of identical strobes for TTL control.
