2 DS125 with a Coolpix 5000 !

  1. 2 DS125 with a Coolpix 5000 !

A friend of my have a problem ! Most of his pictures are overexposed when he's using TTL with his 2 DS125 ! Any idea about that ?

If somebody, with that configuration, doesn't have the problem - what are the settings on the camera and/or on the flashguns ?

    Thanks

  2. The TTL sensor for the cp5000 is located in a position that can sometimes be fooled into thinking that the scene is darker than it really is...so it pumps out more light to compensate and overexposes the shot...

I assume we are speaking of TTL working in a clear Ikelite housing...if he has an aluminum housing the TTL will never work because the sensor is completely blocked

Assuming an Ikelite housing, first check to make sure nothing is blocking the sensor.........then dial the flash compensation to -2......if it is still overexposing the scene, dial back the strobes power setting and/or move them farther away from the subject

  3. He already tried that settings... but it doesn't change anything ! :?

ps : your right - it's an Ikelite housing...

  4. Claude, not sure what to do next...except start shooting manual

I shot a cp5000 for a year and a half and aways shot manual...TTL will easily be fooled with ambient light....with the other settings mentioned above and f8 at 1/250 or higher, I could get nice macro exposures

Try out this website for more info on the cp5000 http://www.daveharasti.com/

  5. I assume CP5000, but which housing?

Are the strobes actually doing TTL (and overexposing) or are they mistakenly doing a full dump?

If the TTL is working, then dial in -1 of exposure compensation. It is possible that the camera's exposure is too high and that any duration of flash will overexpose the image.

  6. George made good point....make sure the strobe switch is set to TTL

  7. Hi !

In fact , between the housing and the principal strobes , that is an ikelite sync cordon !

we don't undurstand why the ttl doesn't work , we think ds 125 is too strong and perhaps ds 50 will be better !!!

  8. I don't think it's that the DS-125's are too strong....they can be controlled....I used that combination with no problems for 1 1/2 years....something else is wrong.....try a different sync cord

  9. If all else fails, you can send it directly to Ikelite for analysis and correction of the problem.

  10. Thanks a lots everyone , thanks Ike and Kdietz...

I'm going to try the new settings , because when i read the ike's link , the speedlight options was different what i used to:

"In the Menu, go to Speedlight Options, then Speedlight Control, then select Auto (a lightning bolt icon and a circled lightning bolt icon wih a line thru it will show on the LCD screen"

I've never used to the settings , perhaps the problems is here !

So, when we read :Set Shutter Speed to 1/100 of a second. Aperture to f/5.6: why ?

Do you think the positions strobes is very important for the TTl.

    See you

I have had mixed experience of using the Nikon 5000 with strobes in TTL mode. I found that the results were ok for potrait shots where the subject was around 1m away. Macro shots were a complete disaster. Mostly over exposed. I guess it is because the camera light sensor is in such a position that it can't properly detect the amount of light being reflected back from the subject when it is close to the camera. It sees less light so tells the strobe to put out more, result, over exposed images! There's no solution except shoot in manual. The Nikon 5000 simply does not offer true TTL control
