New Panasonic 8-18mm f2.8-4 lens announced

  1. Looking forward to seeing some sample photos with this. Although can't see me buying it to replace my 7-14mm f4. Good to see it takes a filter.

  2. Wonder if it would require a new dome too, or perhaps a small extension ring depending on length. Will be interesting to see the quality of the lens, altho I agree with trickster, doubt I'll upgrade my 7-14

  3. I think this lens could be interesting for land use because it will accept filters. Underwater I doubt it will offer any benefit over the 7-14 lenses now available. From what I have seen it (understandably) is similar in size to the 7-14 lenses so I don't think it would work in a N85 dome, but maybe it will and if so, I suppose that could be a benefit.

  4. I don't understand why it would be a "good alternative" to the 7-14 for UW shooters. An aperture of f2.8 isn't all that useful for WA shots, and the price is nearly double. Unless is is markedly better in quality, I don't understand the positioning of this lens in the line up, unless it has advantages above water (OK, filters). Someone educate me please!

  5. Maybe it will foster a new WA lens/dome combo that won't have the fuzzy corners issue of the 7-14. On the GH5 without a 4k crop, that issue may be more prominent.

  6. I'd sacrifice a mm on the wide end for 4mm on the narrow end (that's what she said). Seriously though, I think 18mm will be a lot more useful underwater than 14mm.
