Trip cancellation insurance: recommendations?

4 posts
  1. Have a trip booked in July for some shark diving and would like to get trip insurance that covers cancellation due to poor weather. I've been told that some insurers will only cover cancellations that result from named storms (e.g., Tropical Storm Arthur), but I'm more concerned about high and persistent winds keeping us off the water rather than a big hurricane or something like that. Anyone have recommendations for a reputable insurer?

  2. Wow, I think you are going to struggle to find that - or if you do, it's going to be seriously expensive. Persistent high winds are real Act of God stuff which, I would have thought, most insurers would steer clear. I'd suggest it's just one of those gambles you take with a sport where bad weather can be problematic.

Good luck finding it though! It'd be really interesting to know if it is available and what the premium costs.

  3. DAN Trip Cancellation Insurance seems to cover trips cancelled for "any reason" (I did not investigate what this means, but to me high winds should be included in "any reason"), but is only available to US residents and non-NY residents (which leaves my wife and I out as Canadian residents... boo). I inputed some info for a 1-week trip (the dive portion valued at $2100) and got a quote of USD$177. Here's a link to the DAN insurance for those interested: https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/trip/

  4. Interesting!

    According to the "Detail"

    • Trip Cancellation

Provides reimbursement for unused, non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs if you are prevented from taking your trip due to a covered reason.

I couldn't see on the website what a "covered reason" might be. So definitely worth call to DAN before relying on this policy to cover a dive being cancelled because of poor weather.

    And then

    • Optional Trip Cancellation For Any Reason (Elite Plan Only) (Not available to residents of NY)

Provides reimbursement up to 75% of unused, non-refundable, prepaid trip cost when you cancel for any reason. Available as an optional upgrade if purchased within 24 hours of initial deposit . Trip must be cancelled 48 hours or more Prior to your scheduled Departure Date. Other conditions apply, please see your Description of Coverage or Policy for details.

This reads to me that you can cancel the trip before your departure for any reason ("trip must be cancelled 48 hours or more Prior to your scheduled departure date").

I really have my doubts that a dive cancelled because of bad weather would be covered. But, hey, I'd love to be proved wrong!
