Canon's rumored 12-25mm......

10 posts
  1. I googled this last time we discussed it - and only found a post on Scababoard (i think), which may have be made by a fellow called 'chrism', any relation?

I'd suggest a few posts on DPReview about this, and in no time the rumour will have reached critical mass and the Canon engineers will take note - and hopefully build us the lens!

I think it's odd Canon haven't designed a 12-24 (or 11-25.3 or whatever), but maybe they'd just like us all to buy their full-frame cameras...

  2. Rob,

I really hope Canon finally will give you some wide glass. A real 12-24 L lens would be in my bag as well of course.

But for the time being I enjoy already taking pictures in this 12-24 range. Hope you can join as well somewhere in the future and Canon doesn't let you down

    Julian

  3. If you really want a 12-24 for the Canon look into getting a Sigma 12-24. A quick search on the dpreview Nikon forums shows that a significant percentage of the Nikon body owners prefer the Sigma over the Nikon lens

  4. Good point Herb about the quality and results for the Sigma.

But also be advised that the Sigma 12-24 is too large in diameter for use with some housings. It also has a "built on" lens hood to contend with and does not have a threaded front mount. Meaning you can't mount a diopter if you need one.

    Cheers

    James

  5. Herb, that is an interesting point, although why anyone with a Drebel would want to hang out in the Nikon section of DPreview escapes me...

As James points out, the Sigma is of course too big for most housings (although I reckon I could squeeze it into the Ewa-marine). Otherwise it would be very tempting as an underwater lens. I don't know of any Canon shooters using this underwater.

Chris, according to DPreview 'Canon Lenstalk' forums it is meant to be a 10-22 or a 10-24mm lens. I have tried to make it clear to the DPReview populace that they should be expecting a 12-25mm.

    :P

  6. i'e been rather quiet recently, too much work and not enough time to play, but i think it's time to chime in as i am close to being back in the water

    i have a sigma 12-24 for the canon 10d.

from this sunday onwards i'll be in lembeh/bunaken for 12 days and will be using it then.

i have used it a couple of times underwater already but just to get a feel of the housing/camera as this is a move up for me from the 5050.

i use the jonah housing for now btw. jonah makes a zoom gear for the 12-24 and it fits inthe 8" dome with the extension.

other lenses i plan on using are the 50mm Sigma and the 100mm Canon 2.8 USM Macro.

so when i get back i'll give y'all a full account on that lens and give some information on the jonah saga that i lived through.

dunno if the resorts have internet access or not, if they do i'll try and post some samples as soon as i have somehting worth showing (at least from a lens' perspective :P )

That is because most of them are lunatic pixelpeepers who spent their entire yearly budget on D2H's that they don't understand, so they can't afford decent glass.

In my Oh So Humble Opinion...

Yeah, but those are just rumours. :P

Which confirms what I've heard about Nikon users....

  9. No Chris, you're incorrect, at least about the 12-25 being a rumour. To quote DPReview:

"I have it on good authority (from a very reliable source) that the lens released will be 12-25 in focal length. Not sure if is EF or EF-S at this stage, and I have no idea as to price.

So there, it must be true, even if I was the one who posted the bit about the 12-25! :D
