Roatan & Utila Pictures
Just back from Roatan and Utila shooting with my D100 in a Light & Motion Housing. Aside from the problems with my Ike DS125's, the 50's really stepped up to the plate for my wide angle work. Here are some samples from that 2-week trip. I will have a web posting of all my stuff probably by Saturday. The wide angle shots were taken with a Nikon 12-24 and the others with my 105. I tried to shoot the 60mm macro but it wasn't quite enough to get the shots I wanted.
Here is some feedback for those accepting tricks of the trade. The 4-5 foot (yes, huge) barracuda was swimming under our stilt lodge. Apparently, been there for some time. The owners told me that nobody has ever gotten in the water to photograph him, so I took the opportunity.
I spent 30 minutes just getting acclimated to his behavior and identifying my shooting scenario. He kept coming up to me near the lighted side of the lodge, so before I started trying to photograph the big fish, I did some pre-exposures on the ambient light to get the right negative space exposure on my D100. Didn't want to have to worry about that exposure when I did get the chance to bang a few shots of the cuda. Next, my encounters with him were brief (3-5 shots) so I also took another measure. I pre-focused my lens, about 5 inches from the port, on a piling then turned the camera onto manual to "lock the focus". Now I have my ambient light, and focus targeted in. Next, I shot a few test shots on the piling to get a basic exposure before I hunted for the barracuda again.
It all paid off. With the Light & Motion housing, I simply shot, viewed, made a quick lighting adjustment with my thumb on the ROC, and shot again. I have about 10 keepers. This is one of them. I had about four good encounters, and a long one when someone threw in squid. Got to watch him feed from 1 feet.
Enjoy!
