Ok..this may have been obvious to some people but not me.. UWPHOTOnewbie figured it out.. If the pop up flash opens (which can happen in Ike case) you will not get shutter speeds beyond 1/500 even in M mode. Im not sure how this happened to me during a dive but it did.. very frustrating to shoot sunbursts with 1/500th... Now where's my duct tape to keep the pop up taped down...

I don't know how the D70 works, but on most Canons, the only time the flash automatically pops up is when the camera is in Auto mode. If that's the case with the D70 as well, I'd get out of that mode and shoot in Manual or Aperture Priority whenever possible.

Of course the right solution is to stay out of full auto (green) mode. I only shoot in M underwater. But it did happen to me while on land playing around with it by accident. I'm not one to duct tape my $1000 baby but I did use a bit of packing foam inside to keep the pop-up flash all the way down. To be specific, the pop up flash will not fire unless its all the way up--something to watch out for when doing flash photography while wearing a baseball cap. The tab on the Ikelite hotshoe connector also prevents this.
The trouble is with using only a few of the Nikon hotshoe pins. The camera knows the SB-800 is there and won't pop up (unless the SB-800 is turned off). The Ikelite non-TTL housing doesn't use all of the pins and therefore the camera doesn't know its connected to a flash. I'm hoping that when Ikelite updates all our housings to TTL this will be solved (both fingers crossed!). Also, I'd love to have access to the flash exposure compensation button as well. This way you could do both "manual" and TTL on the same dive. Of course adding FEC control only underscores the need for the camera keeping the pop-up flash closed. When you push the FEC button it triggers the pop-up flash unless it senses a TTL flash like the SB-800.
