White Sea ice diving

  1. Hi,

Heres a video from my recent trip to Russia.

The 10bit colors from the gh5 paid off. The colors of the light shining through the ice are awesome on my new 10bit video editing monitor.

But my favourite is the sea butterfly shot.

  2. Very nice indeed Alex!

    Nice edit and colors.

    A couple of questions:

    - All recorded with natural light or have used some video lights?

    - What is the name of the creature at 3:00?

    Thank you!

Thats the Sea Butterfly, max 4 cm big.

The entry ice shot was without lights.

On the other ice formations i used one light most of the time, just to lit the kelb or a rock. But I mWB at ambient light at the depth i start recording. Only in shallow water of course.

  5. Very interesting film. The macro shots are great, especially considering how cold you must have been. Too extreme for me!

    Thank you for the comment!

You are right. Macro is not the easiest under such conditions.

On a macro dive i did an area of max 5 squaremeters, because there was so much crawling around. So no warming up with motion....Altough i had heated glows my fingers get cold on macro dives. But i was not afraid of 60 minutes dives or even longer.

    Hey....its all for the images...

  7. Hi Alex,
    great video!
Like that macro shots very much.
    What was the "foggy" white?
A kind of sediment layer or a halocline?

    Regards,
    Wolfgang

    Thank you Wolfgang!

    No, thats hydrogen sulfur gas.

Its only there in winter. Due the ice there are no waves then. Its only in one area. They call this area Biofilter bay.

  9. Hi Alex,

ah thats the same stuff in Angelita in Tulum.
That would be the other extreme divesite for you...
Cold sweetwater on top, then the layer of the hydrogen sulfur and under it, warm ( hot ) saltwater...

    Regards,
    Wolfgang

PS: sorry for the bad quality, that was more then 10 years ago, and is the only copy i have on this pc....
