Which housing for Sony Cybershot F707?

  1. I saw on digideep.com that more housings are becoming available for my Sony DSC-F707. Does anyone have experience with any of those?

Ikelite is heavily recommended on this forum I notice. For me it seems an obvious choice to EXCEPT that their housing won't allow for add-on wide angle lenses.

Amphibico seems to have the wide-angle option on their housing.

Any F707 users that can comment on this?

  2. I am also looking for a housing for the Sony F707. I haven't bought a housing yet but I am leaning towards the Amphibico housing. The reason. The Ikelite doesn't allow for use of wide angle lens. I think this ia a must for underwater photography. THe Ikelite does have controls for nearly all camera function but will you every use all of them underwater. The Amphibico gives you the probably useful functions plus wide angle lens.

Now it's my turn. What strobe are you using or going to use?:D

  3. I was already for 85% convinced it should be the Ikelite, even without the Wide Angle option. But after talking last sunday to one of my freedive instructors I'm doubting heavily again.

He really dind'nt like Ikelite and told me to go for a compact aluminium housing.

Decision isn't going to be easier this way, I hear a lot of good reviews of Ikelite housings. Haven't seen anyone using a 707 though.

The choice of strobe I had postponed until after finally deciding which housing to buy. I think I would have gone for the DS-125 with the Ikelite housing.

On their websites it says that the W/A conversion lens won't fit on the 707 housing because of the diameter of the lens on the sony. So maybe if we ask Sea & Sea enough times to make a bigger one for our Sonys we still end up with a perfetc package

  4. We also would like to know if any of the wild claims for F707 housings are possible. The Inon or Sea & Sea wide angle lenses could have been attached but required zooming to telephoto to eliminate vignetting. We didn't think this accomplished anything. Gates also has wild claims for a new F707 housing and flash that just plugs in and does TTL. Considering our test results, we say good luck or else we missed the boat completely.

The F707 is a spectacular camera for above water but not the best choice underwater actually.

  5. What camera is a good camera for underwater and why? I've used the Nikon 5000 and was disapointed with it's performance in several areas. Color abberation, slow lens, etc. I,ve owned two other Nikons and the 5000 is not up there standards. Just my thoughts. The Sony and Nikon both have great macro.

Check out Amphibico housing for the F707 and let know what you think. I will be spending alot of money so I the info. :D

  6. It seems like 80% of the wetpixel visitors are using a Coolpix 5000. I haven't used that camera so I can not judge it. Underwater use was not on my requirements list when I went shopping for a digital cam. For me the selling points for the F707 were the excellent lens with 5x mechanical zoom, the viewfinder, 5Mpx CCD and the user reviews on battery use.

In my opinion with this camera you are lost between 'amateurs' and pro's. Maybe that's why the options of housings are limited. The pro's will go for D1X or so with $4000 housings, the amateurs (no offense!) buy a Sony P5 with marine pack.

Probably the market in between is not that big.

Thank you Ike for explaining why the WA lens won't be of use on the F707.

By the way, I talked to a photographer & a video diver during the freediving championships in the Netherlands, they were both using Ikelite and were very content with it.

Probably picking a housing is like choosing your first car brand. A little bit of luck, wisdom & family tradition

    :D

  7. Hi Ike,

I'm thinking of purchasing your housing for the CP5000, does this housing accepts the Inon and Sea & Sea wide Angle lens ?, and if so what is the angle of view ?

    Dolphin

  8. The Coolpix 5000 does accept either the Inon or Sea & Sea lenses. Click here for information on this housing complete with links to sample pictures with the wide angle lens and a Special Comments link with further information. Many of our newest video housings also accept these lenses.

  9. I would like to here from others that are using an Amphibico housing, especially thise using the Siny F707.

  10. After a lot of doubt & reading as much as I could I ordered the Ikelite housing yesterday with a DS125 substrobe.

Pro Ikelite: the huge range of housings they offer, must be a lot of experience. Pricing is good. Good strobe package

    Con: no Wide angle lens

Pro amphibico: somewhat smaller housing, Wide angle lens, price is good

Con: their first housing for stills. No strobe to go with the package

Based on these points I made the decision to go for Ikelite

  11. Congrats on your purchase. I can wait to buy setup myself but I am afew months away from buying.

As I understand, after writing to Amphibico, using the LSD, light sensor device, any strobe will work the housing and camera. This device is connected directly to the camera via a connection thru the housing to the ACC connection on the camera. Do you know if Ike is going to make a wide angle lens for this setup? Just from my reading it seems that most photographers really love shooting w/ 19mm to 16mm lens. Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't a very popluar lens on the Nikonus? Wide angle is something that I want in an underwater setup.

Post pics as soon as get them. I would love to see the results.
