I think I am doing something wrong with my Ikelite DS-50 strobe. At least 50% of my underwater pictures appear as if the strobe did not go off. The pictures are very dark. I can see that the strobe went off when I take the pictures. I have a Olympus 3020, with an Ikelite housing and a DS-50 strobe. The strobe is 'connected' via the slave. I deflect the internal strobe with the supplied shield (and the internal flash is set to be always on). I make sure to partially press the shutter button focus and pre-flash. The strobe is set to ttl (not manual). I normally use the camera on program underwater (and aperture or shutter priority above water). Have I screw things up? Should I set the camera (when underwater) to shutter priority and set the shutter spread to around 1/60th or 1/80th a second to better synch the strobe? (I normally fairly close to my subject less the 3 feet. The strobe is normally off to the side at 45 degree angle slightly above camera level.)
HELP???
Thanks
Marc
Maybe set the strobe to "slave"
First let me say that I do not own nor have I operated an Ikelite DS-50. My experience is limited to a ys90dx and the Inons. When I used a Canon G1 which triggered the strobe via a fiber optice cable from the housing, I needed the strobe to be on "slave" vs. manual or TTL. If a slave setting is available, this will fix your problem.
As far as mode, I always shot aperature priority so that I could count of it all working "in sync".
Hope this helps and if I am way off, then I'll learn as more posts follow.
Mike
I recommend full manual to force the camera to need light e.g. f 4.5 s 1/100.
Then it's a question of, is your slave working properly? I assume you have the TTL slave. This slave cannot be set to ignore prflash so you are stuck using TTL, which is great if it works. A safer choice is the manual controller set to ignore preflash.
Either way you should be able to test in a dimly lit room.
As far as I know all Olympus cameras do have TTL that differs from Nikon-TTL (wich is used by Ikelite strobes).
I heard something about older Ikelite strobes that do not work correctly with Nikon digital cameras... Maybe there is also a problem with Olympus cameras?!?
