manual use of strobe

  1. manual use of strobe

I am using a Sony 707 camera with an Ikelite hosuing and Ikelite DS50 substrobe. I tried setting the camera in 'P mode' (auto) and used the TTL. The results were mixed and of course the camera tries to set a shutter speed to avoid camera shake so it seems to default to f 2.0 the largest f-stop on the camera lense.

After some reading I tried moving the dial to manual and set the camera to f5.6 with a shutter speed of 200 using the macro feature of the camera as the water was cloudy. I dive around Vancouver island Canada in the pacific where ambient light in the summer is moderate to bad with algie blooms blocking out light at times.

When I went to manual I left the strobe in TTL mode. Should I switch it off TTL? The DS50 strobe does not seem to have any other option other than FULL which seemed like too much on the day in question.

  2. Use manual settings for the camera f 5.6 and 1/100 sec. a good starting point.

Per Ike's site, your housing supports TTL.

If it works, use it. You can test in a dimly lit room.

If it doesn't work, you can try setting the strobe to manual, but unless you can stop the samera from sending a preflash, this will not work since the preflash will fire the strobe and it will not have time to recover for the main flash.

As for controlling the amount of light in manual mode, if you can get it working, you can change where the strobe is aimed if you are getting too much light at full power.

  3. Hi Peter,

I just got the DS-50 with the manual controller. I use the olympus 5050 with the PT-015 housing.

From the little note that came with the strobe, it was stated to set the strobe to TTL. So i presume this is correct.

So what settings do i set the camera to? To "M"?

I have friends who told me to set to "S", then play around with the f-stop on the manual controller. Is that a good way?

    Hope to get some advice.

First time with a strobe, so very confused... : )
