  1. Olympus 5060 help

I just acquired an Ikelite housing with an Olympus 5060 and am having a few issues. The instruction manual (online and the cheap one you get with the camera are not helpful.)

I had a hell of a time getting manual to work with an IKE DS50, then discovered that I need to change the internal flash setting to external....

then change the accessory setting to on (housing).

Things seem to work with this arrangement in every capacity (wide angle to super macro). Is this correct thinking on settings to get an external Ike DS50 to fire in TTL every time? Until I made these changes both flashes were firing and sometimes the unit fired all by its lonesome.

I prefer to shoot all manual while underwater if that helps you help me.

Also, I cannot find in the manual (PDF MANUAL FROM Oly's website) how to save custom settings. Everytime I turn off the camera it defaults back to P mode and resets my accessory and flash settings. How do I either save these as my default settings or save them as custom settings?

I am off to some tidepools so I'll let you know how it goes.

    Thanks for the help.

    Joe

  2. Settings for these cameras is confusing because they have so many capabilities. Following works if you read thoroughly, carefully and follow instructions:

The last paragraph is result of my frustration when I was doing some strobe testing.

  3. Hi Joe

As Ike says on his site - you need to change the "all reset" in the settings menu to "off" .

Also , to save settings try reading up on the "My mode " feature of the camera - it is a great help .

This link has some useful advice http://www.splashdowndivers.com/photo_gall...up_settings.htm

  4. Ditto to what Andy says - My mode is the way to go. You can set up to 8, I have them for underwater as normal shooting (wide angle and scenics with strobe), one each for macro and super macro with strobe, and then one at a higher "iso" for fast shots with ambient light. Then you only need to switch My Mode settings as conditions change on the dive.

You can also do little helpers like:

    1. dialing down the internal flash (when in slave mode) to fire at lowest output, which saves battery power

    2. turning off Full time autofocus (also to save batteries), but having it on for fast ambient light shots (like dolphins), which cuts down shutter lag a lot

    3. Setting the exposure compensation a stop or so darker for macro shots (even with my Sea & Sea 90 flash at low power, images were still a little hot, telling the 5060 to underexpose a little made them perfect.

    4. Presetting white balance for cloudy, which ads warmth to the images (similar to an underwater red filter) - unless you are shooting in RAW mode and post process.

If you can, check your exposures after one dive on a full sized laptop - I was using manual too, but found some shots that looked good in the 5060 LCD monitor were a little underexposed full size on a computer screen.

Hope these help, the camera does a great job!

  5. Cloudy WB - must give that a go this weekend .Thanks for the tip !!

Sounds like we have a similar setup .
