shutter speed
Somebody told me that 1/60th sec shutter speed was the optimum for colour saturation with slide film. Does this hold true for the digital chip?

No. Digital image sensors are linear. Same exposure will yeild the same result independent of the shutter/aperture combination you use.
And it's good that digital can easily go higher since 1/60 sec is right on the edge re motion blurring. That's why I like to use 1/100. Or higher for darker backgrounds.
