Aiming lights on Strobe Question

  1. Aiming lights on Strobe Question

    Possible DUMB Question:

I am using dual ikelite ds-50 strobes and thinking about putting two aiming flash lights on the strobes. Do you have to turn off these aiming lights BEFORE you take the shot so you don't get any hot spot (light spots from the flash lights) in the shot? Or will the strobe's lights just over power any hot spots from the aiming flash lights?

    Thanks

    Marc

  2. if you have aiming lights attached to the strobes then the strobes need to be pointed directly onto your subject. while this may be ok a large portion of the time in clear water, you will illuminate a large amount of particulate at other times (obviously not ideal).

Secondly, if your shutter speed is circa 1/125th or faster you shouldn't see the hotspots created by your aiming lights (depending on the intensity of course!) - a pair of Q40's don't show up in my pictures at all.
