UK Q40 as Modeling Light

  1. UK Q40 as Modeling Light

    I use a D60 in a S&S Housing with soon 2 DS125.

I'm looking for a Modeling light i want to mount at the "cold" shoe of the housing.

Is the UK Q40 usable for this or is it to weak?

    Simon

  2. I don't think it’s a good light for the purpose you want.

Do you plan to turn it off before shooting? If yes, its not have a switch so you have to play with the reflector, I done it with a smaller model of the UK (don't remember the model) and after 2 dives I found water in the reflector.

If you plan to take the shot with the light turn on you'll probably see hot spot of the light.

I checked a led light last week and found it very good as modeling light since it’s gave unified beam and the color of the led light is very close to the flash light (around 5000-5400 k)

  3. Hi Simon,

Well my experience with the miniQ40's was a little different than alto's. I used one for a year or so and then two clamped together before finally purchasing the L&M mode light which has not been available now for a while.

Anyway, the trick for good diffuse light is to get a small piece of aluminum foil, crinkle it up then fit it inside the reflector bowl of the light.

Didn't have any trouble with a hot spot but I've usually set my shutter speed up high when doing macro, mainly looking for a black background. ULCS makes a dual miniQ 40 holder that can really work quite nicely as two of them throw a good light beam.

    FWIW.

  4. Hi alto,

which LED Light do you use?

Will the "Hot Spot" be a problem with 2 DS125 at 1/125?

  5. Hello Simon,

I got a prototype of the Fantasea 50 LED Light last week.

The light is not dedicated for photography but it very good as a modeling light.

It has a connector that enable to connect it very easily to arm and so.

It was very comfortable to dive with it at night since he have good strength of light to serve as main light, maybe for modeling only I'll prefer something smaller.
