Is a D2X still viable?

  1. Is it still viable to use a D2X for underwater?

How big a difference would there be between a D2X and a D800 ? (apart from resolution)

End use is online publication of images and planning on printing a letter size semi gloss booklet at some stage down the road.

Clearly there is a huge difference in generations of sensor, but considering underwater is a massive difference to above water and given we have a massive filter (water column) between the subject and the sensor, how big a difference does the latest and greatest sensor make to something like a D2X or a d2/300?

  2. The biggest limitation of the D2X is ISO. It is a base ISO camera (ISO 100) and increasing the ISO at all means the image quality falls apart by modern standards. Despite being just 12MP - the files still hold up well and process well and can be uprezzed. Therefore it is best for macro and wide angle in bright conditions with powerful strobes - so that you can shoot at low ISO.

Shooting the camera - the LCD screen is very small these days. But the AF is still pretty decent.

  3. Great info right there! Thanks for that.

There is the one thing I had not thought about.....ISO. Of course all the cams coming out today are low light monsters.....never really thought about the difference between an ISO 100 base camera and a cam that happily shoots at ISO 3200. Massive difference right there.

    Thanks for the insight. Invaluable.
