How to retain image info after resizing?

  1. How to retain image info after resizing?

    Guys,

Recently I took some u/w photos with my Nikon E5200. Since the 5M sizes are pretty big, I downsized it using the simple PhotoEditor that comes with Microsoft Office. However, after downsizing the photo size and saving it in jpeg, I find that the info attached to the file is lost. All those valuable info on aperture size, shutter speed, etc. are gone. Can someone tell me how to retain these info after modifying the original photo?

    Thx.

  2. EXIF

If you just want to resize (or some basic colour correction) then this is a good program. It'll retain the camera info (exif data) when you resize. It is free: http://www.irfanview.com

Or checkout the CD that came with your camera - it probably has it's own image processing program.

Otherwise Adobe Photoshop (version 7 and CS) is a very powerful package but is very pricey.

  3. The best answer is Adobe Photoshop CS for $650.

A close second best answer is Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 for $99 but now on sale for $50 and shipping 10/27.

All other solutions pale by comparison in one area or another.

  4. You can also copy EXIF and IPTC information around from files with the same name by using BreezeBrowser (http://breezesys.com) or the free (postcardware) program, EXIFER (http://www.friedemann-schmidt.com/software/exifer/).

I always copy my EXIF info back to smaller files after I edit them (except for images on the web, because the additional info uses up space). I believe Photoshop CS discards EXIF information that it doesn't know about, and I want to keep it all, including camera settings, etc.

  5. I use a nerdy solution, jhead:

This will strip the EXIF from any jpeg and stuff it into any other jpeg. Command line interface so you can write a simple script to batch process.
