  1. Visions Conference - London 23 October

    Hi Gang,

Just a quick post to remind people (particularly European based photographers) that the Visions in the Sea Conference is happening on Saturday 23rd October in London. The content this year is wholly digital - hurrah!

    See http://www.digideep.com/news_details.php?i...?id=137_0_1_0_C for more information.

If anyone from Wetpixel is coming please let me know and say hi.

    Alex

I am speaking at the conference (and I have been give a whole hour!). My talk is entitled "Digital Thinking" and this is the summary from the official conference materials (I dunno who wrote this but it summarises much of my talk pretty well!):

Alex Mustard – Think digital. Digital cameras work in a different way from film. Alex will show how to evolve techniques to make the best use of those differences. He believes there is no point in just trying to reproduce the shots we take on film. Nor should we shoot them in the same way. Instead, by thinking digitally, he will show how we can achieve much more. He will discuss available light filtration, “Nemo” lighting, telephoto shooting - all techniques he has been working on this year. Nevertheless, he will not neglect the standard photographic techniques ... but he will give them a digital twist. In addition, he will discuss how to harness what post processing can do to our images and suggest how to shoot images with this in mind. Alex will also reveal how being able to review images underwater also allows us to reproduce complementary colours much more accurately than on film as well as to light wide angle images much more creatively than we would dare on film. This facility also allows us to take on very tough behavioural subjects that may take 50 or more shots to catch the moment – for example, spawning Anthias! Equally important in digital thinking is knowing the limitations of the kit and shooting to its strengths - sunbursts are still better on film, and compact cameras with a shutter delay are not suitable for fast moving action.

Obviously not written by you... :)

  3. You're not wrong, Rand!

I am actually going to use your picture in this talk - appropriately credited of course - (along with my D70 pool shots - that have been up here on Wetpixel) to prove how well digital can do with sunbursts.

  4. Hi Alex

I'm based in London and have just signed up to head along on Saturday - not been before and not quite sure what to expect as a beginner - looking forward to it anyway, though suspect that it may give me itchy feet!

Also just received the new Divequest brochure for 2005 - the cover shot is stunning!!

  5. Hi Mel,

Make sure you say hi. The conference is fun and a good social as well as being a great source of information. Not just from the speakers - but there is usually a lot to learn from chatting to other delegates too.

Thanks for the complements about the Divequest Brochure. I am very pleased with how it has printed. That cover is the original shot - but I will be showing the modified version at Visions...

  6. Hi Alex

Thanks for the reassurance on the "fun and social" side - haven't really met many people interested in underwater photography in the UK and there is only so much that my non-diving mates can take!

Saw from one of your other posts that you're just back from Bali - I stayed at Seraya last December whilst most of it was still being built - assume that it is now finished and open to the public. Was awesome having that shore dive at the bottom of the garden!!

    Hopefully meet you Sat

    Mel
