Wide Angle lens recommendation

6 posts
  1. Which Nikkor lens,  say a Nikkor 12 - 24 mm, would you recommend for wide angle UW photography?
And should I use a flat port or a dome for it?
If a dome, one with a gentle or a marked curvature?  Your opinion is much appreciated.

  2. In my opinion, I would recommend the 16-35mm with a dome port.

A flat port will increase the pincushion distortion. therefore, avoid using flatport for wide angle photography.

The curvature of the dome will have some effect on the distortion of the image used with different lenses. But it won't be alot.

Another lens to consider for Underwater wide angle is 15mm fisheye. can be used with mini dome.

     FX or DX?

If DX then the 10-24 and a 180 dome.

If FX the 16-35 but you defo then need a 230 domeport and arguably the Sea & Sea correction lens too

  4. Consult the port charts for your housing manufacturer.  Most of them can be found on the websites of the major underwater photo retailers or the housing manufacturers websites.  Definitely a dome port - you don't want to throw away 30% of the field of view by using a flat port.   The limit for a flt port is around 24mm equivalent FL and even there the corners are poor.  FX or DX makes a difference 16mm is not that wide on DX.  You can use smaller ports if the corners are not important - for example shooting in blue water.

  5. My pick would be

    10-17 Tokina for DX

    8-15 NIkon for FX

    230mm dome port

If you are looking for fisheye, I'd agree with Chris - although I don't think much of the Tokina 10-17 on FX.
