I have been shooting a dx2 in a Subal ND2 with a dp-230/3 dome.
Interested in moving up to a d3x with a 16-35 f4.
Have
d3x
subal nd3 with 4 mount
subal 230 with three mount
question:
can the 16-35 be used with a series 3 subal mount?
No guessing please...

Is the question does the 16-35 f4 fit in the smaller type 3 dome adapted to a type 4 housing?

It'll be the size of the opening on the Type 3 domeport which will be the potential problem.
- Nikon list the maximum diameter of the 16-35 as 82.5mm.
- According to Reef Photo, the Type 3 port is 100mm with a 93.5mm flange:

So should be fine. Tight fit, but fine.
The zoom ring should be inside the housing (not the port) so that shouldn't be a problem. Although you'll probably always have to fit the lens (with camera) through the back of the housing - not lens only through the port opening. So removing the camera to do a lens change.
