Using SB-800 UW

  1. Using SB-800 UW

i recently bought a SB-800 for my d100 and i was first wondering if this would fit in the subal housing for the SB-80DX. Also has anyone used either of these topside flashes UW and how did they work as compared to a non-TTL strobe. i have been using a DS-125 and would like to add this as my primary strobe for macro and use both strobes for wide angle.

  2. As far as I know the SB-800 is almost identical to the SB-80DX externally, and thus fits the aftermarket housings for the SB-80 with no problems. I think James has a housing available for sale, btw.

Alex Mustard has used the SB-80DX UW a fair bit, and got good results. Hopefully he'll chime in.

When you say "primary" strobe for macro, do you mean "only" strobe, or a dual strobe setup?

I don't think it will work blending an SB-80 with a DS125, even with the SB-80 as the primary strobe giving the camera "strobe ready" information.

Manual control with wideangle should not be a problem though.

  3. Is there a way to use the SB-800 with an Ikelite D70 housing?

Which strobe housing would I use.?

  4. Any of the Subal or Seacam strobe housings would work. You would need to request that your Ikelite housing comes delivered with a 5 pin strobe-hotshoe connection.

  5. I have used a SB-80 DX in a Sealux hosing besides a SB 105 shooting UW with S2 pro and it worked well, although TTL is with any regular TTL-strobe on the S2 possible. Recently I have not used the SB-80 anymore and I preferred an equal set-up withdual SB-105's.

  6. so do you think my best bet would be to get another DS125 and just continue to work non-TTL for macro and wide angle (where i guess you don't need ttl too much).

  7. ttl or manual ?

I can't answer that question, since I am using TTL with the S2 only so far and with good results...maybe you should change to a S2 :D ? But eventually I will have the same question for myself by thinking to go for the new DX2  !!

  8. CHeck out the thread called "TTL Annonymous" in this forum. I think it's pinned at the top.

    Cheers

  9. yeah, i didn't do as much research as i thought i did when i picked up my camera. i do with that i bought a S2 instead of a d100, but now i still like my choice.
