  2. Some years ago I spent several weeks on a sailboat traveling and diving Tahiti.

One of my business partners just returned from a month on a boat there.

She dove the Marquessas and Fakarava. I dove Huahine, Tahaa, Riatea, Bora Bora, Maupiti and Rangiroa.

Great Viz, great diving and great people eveywhere.

Lots of Macro stuff and coral starts at the shoreline.

Viz was 150 feet everywhere we went.

    You will love it.

Don't know if you're still researching this trip. I was just there this past September/October. The diving is fantastic, with an unending parade of large animals. I spent one week on the Tahiti Aggressor diving the passes and corners in the Tuamotus and then one week in the Society Islands diving the outer reefs. I posted a (rather long) trip report on another diving board. http://dive.scubadiving.com/members/tripre...orts.php?s=2791 for the Aggressor part of the trip and http://dive.scubadiving.com/members/tripre...orts.php?s=2792 for the Society Islands part of the trip.

My only caveat is that the pass diving and the drift diving on the corners and walls of the Tuamotu atolls is intermediate to advanced diving with deep profiles, long bottom times, and raging currents. Since it sounds like you are a very new initiate to scuba, you might want to hold off on those dives for this trip and stick to the more gentle moored dives like the kind I did in the Society Islands. Great photo ops either way.

    Enjoy!

  5. Smash: I really enjoyed your trip report.

  6. Going to Tahiti as well

I'm looking for the same info since I'm going to stopover in Tahiti with my oldest son on our way to New Zealand. I'm an advanced diver but he is a beginner so finding something to suit both of us is my biggest concern. From what I've gathered the diving near Tahiti Nui is not great and the coral is not very colorful. I believe there is a lot of sharks and swift drift drives through canyons riding tidal current. Fiji sounds significantly better but Tahiti just turns out to be along the way to New Zealand with Air Tahiti. I'm looking into getting a 10 dive pass and using it on Rangiloa in the Tuamotu Atolls. It looks like most of the dive sits are close to the resort area so easy day trip diving. I usually do liveaboards but with my son being a new diver, he probably will want to spend more time surfing and laying on the beach. Let me know what you find out. Good luck! Hopefully, I'll be there in mid-January!
