Original Sony A7 Question

5 posts
  1. Hello everyone,

Starting to think about diving again post-Covid...

I currently own the original 24mp Sony A7 which I use in a Nauticam NA-A7 housing. The ONLY lenses I use with this camera is the Nikonos 15mm f2.8, and Nikonos 20mm f2.8,  with the Nauticam adapter. I have a Nauticam 180 viewfinder.

It is pretty much a digital Nikonos V

Autofocus is disabled due to the lens used. On land I only used adapted Nikon Ai-S manual lenses.

Given these constraints, and the fact I would have to move to a different housing, would there be any advantage upgrading to a newer Sony A7xx body with this scenario?

Would the original 12 mp Sony A7S body be an "upgrade"?

    Anyone care to weigh in?

    Ian

  2. I have the newer A7 RII. I have a friend with your camera body. Both are noted to have extraordinary sharp auto focus. I cannot think of a reason not to take advantage of the feature.

I'm old school and let the camera and its capabilities lead. I'm shooting the  Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master Lens

  3. An A7 III or newer camera will get you the much larger NP-FZ100 battery that would let you shoot for an entire day without opening the housing. Newer Sony cameras also have reworked menus and better underwater white balance, which may be important to you if you're shooting video or natural light photos. There are some incremental improvements in sensors as well, but mostly Sony has been improving autofocus speed, accuracy, and features such as subject recognition and tracking - if you're staying with a manual focus lens, you wouldn't get any use out of those.

Edit: Oh yeah, newer camera models have much better video capabilities as well as photo bursts. A1 also has a new shutter that can sync with strobes at 1/400s (1/500s in APS-C crop). Not knowing how and what you're shooting, I can't say whether or not those are important to you.

  4. Hey

    Thanks for the input:fishblue:

  5. Ian, I've got the Nikonos 15mm 2.8 with Nauticam adapter for my (now old) NEX5r housing, but have not even used the lens yet - primarily because I've been afraid to take it underwater after 20 years of not being serviced. Do you service your Nikonos equipment yourself, or can you suggest anyone who might? Thanks

Whoops, nevermind, just came across an older thread where you provided some great info. Thanks!
