Check out this thread:

and the chart that is linked there.
$2 1/2 thousand bucks for the 625! That's got to hurt!
Where can you buy them?
If you live in the US, and don't consider Eurpoean strobes, there are 3 immediately available strobes:
For about $500 you can get an Ikelite SS400 - a 400 watt second strobe. It has a modelling light and multiple power settings and a removable rechargable battery pack.
Sea and Sea YS350 - Same features as the Ike but more $$ and less Watt Seconds.
Nikon SB104 - Same features as the Ike but more $$ and less Watt Seconds.
If you include Substronic and Hartenberger you have 2 others to choose from.

I recall hearing that forum sponsor Backscatter is carrying the Hartenberger line.
I believe the Ikelite Substrobe 400 has been discontinued.
Ryan at forum sponsor UWCP may have access to the Subtronic line.
The Hartenberger price listed in the Strobe Finder is derived by currency conversion ( Euros to USD ) the day the strobes were entered into the database. IOW, that list price varies depending upon the strength of each currency. The reseller will set the final price, regardless.
I found it interesting that Hartenberger lists identical GN for both top side and underwater. Explanation for their claim is found in their strobe manuals.
Oh, I'll bet Ike has some SS400's around somewhere...:-) I used one of them before and it was awesome. It's not so much power as beam angle. Strobe aiming was a lot easier...:-)

SubStrobe 200 and 400 flashtubes were wonderful for film, but fire too slowly to do digital TTL. They are fine operating as manual strobes, but the 400 is one big animal above water, and only gets lighter not smaller underwater.............
Please don't give Whitehead too many idea otherwise I will have to wear my sunglasses underwater when I next dive with him :-)
Hartenberger and Subtronic both sell direct to US customers. An alternate to the Subtronics are the Seacam strobes available through Stephen Frink. These are Subtronics internally but have some packaging improvements. Of course, buying through a US dealer would be preferrable but I have some Mini's coming to test and have the 625's as well. Both were ordered direct.
