Shutter Speed too fast?

That's my guess as well. I think sync speed on your Sony is 1/250th... with faster and faster shutter speeds the black band gets bigger and bigger.

Thanks this is shot at 1/320 - will try to limit below 200 to be safe .

Strobe sync speed for Sony cameras (with the exception of A1) is 1/160s. If you use a TTL-capable trigger, such as the one from UW-Technics, it provides more accurate timings and full-frame cameras (A7, A9) can go to 1/250s.
Edit: This is referring to interchangeable-lens cameras. Compacts (RX10, RX100) have leaf shutters that can sync all the way to 1/2000s.

I have a Sony A7 RIII, fastest sync speed is 1/250 with a Sony flash or external TTL such as Ikelite.
The 1/160 is correct for older cameras (such as my old A65)

It depends on what is triggering it, the trigger needs to fool the camera into thinking there's a Sony flash attached. If it's a manual trigger it needs to get the timing right to achieve 1/250.
Best thing to do is take a few test shots to see what minimum speed you need.
