Fresh water service interval

  1. I've seen 2 years suggested as a starting point for Nauticam service. I dive fresh water, 40-50 dives/season with a salt water trip maybe every other year. Does it still make sense to send it in for service every 2 years?  Imagine button o-rings are the primary reason.  Thanks.

  2. Interesting question, Ryan.

I think a number of people will respond that they rarely/seldom/never get their housings serviced unless there's a problem (me included). The "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" principle.

If you're only fresh water diving I'd be even less keen to get a housing serviced. By and large it's salt that does the potential damage. For those occasional salt water dives, good soaks, pressing all the buttons, tweaking dials whilst soaking all helps.

Servicing is really expensive and not impossible that it introduces problems that wern't there before hand. Under the circs you outline, I certainly wouldn't suggest a 2-year service.......

  3. "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"  - words to live by.

I take pretty good care of the gear so hopefully it'll be a long time before I need "service".  Thanks Tim.

    :good:

  5. My Nauticam EM-1 MkII housing is now approaching 5 years old and has not been serviced and still going strong.    A good long soak after every dive session before I open the housing is my recipe along with pushing every button several times during the soak.

  6. Same here, my housings are 9 and 18 years old, never serviced, the original O rings are still working just fine.

But a word of caution if you dive in sandy waters, as one of my buddies does.  He fins away, taking photos about one foot above the bottom, and sand finds it way into every nook of his housing, I have needed to remove all the buttons and O rings of his housing to clean them of sand.

How to tell if a housing needs servicing? I look at it closely and test it overnight in a pool or tank.  If the buttons work smoothly and it does not leak, it is good to go diving.

  7. thanks for the data points... 5-18 years! and a good reminder to work the button after a salty dive.

Not much sand round here - mostly muck.
