Isla Mujeres recommendations

  1. Hi all

I'm in the early stages of thinking of going to Isla Mujeres around July 2023. This will be a regular holiday with diving / snorkelling thrown in, but the main draw for going there will be to spend a couple of days with the whale sharks.

I'm aware there have been trips organised by wetpixel and I'm sure others here have gone independently, so does anybody have any first hand recommendations for boats that are particularly photographer friendly for the whale sharks, and also maybe a dive operator for regular diving.

We plan to be staying towards the north of the island if that makes any difference

    cheers

    Mike

Place with yellow submarine outside shop.  I learned side mount there and they will do advanced dives.  Not limited to museo as most other cruise ship oriented shops just do that dive over and over.

  3. The normal whale shark tours do not cater for photographers, and bluntly offer a very poor experience in general.

    Will you see whale sharks...yes

Will you spend any time in the water with them...no.

Will there be a whole bunch of other people jumping on to and all around you...yes.

Will you get photographic opportunities...highly unlikely

We charter boats from an operator that knows what they are doing, leave very early, and return very late. When the bulk of the tour boats are there, we tend to head away and return once they have all gone...

Thanks Adam, this is what I was concerned about. Can you recommend any particular boat I could look  at chartering please?
