S&S Canon 100mm Macro Focus Gear Problem

  1. S&S Canon 100mm Macro Focus Gear Problem

Yesterday I got the Focus gear for my Canon 100mm Macro (used with a D60 in a DX30/60 housing)

The gear fits perfectly on the lens but ends about 7mm outside of the main housing and doesn't make contact to the Focus/Zoom knob in the housing this way.

    What am I doing wrong?

Fast help would be great because I'm flying out to the Maledives next Sunday.

  2. I have used the 100mm in my S&S 10D housing for a few dives now. On my housing, the manual focus is done from the knob on the port, not the housing. Which flat port are you using?

  3. I do not have a Canon OR an S&S, but it sure sounds like the gear is on backwards, and the "overhang" should be heading inside the housing to mate with the gear on the housing, as Mike suggests.

***edit*** after re-reading your post and my post, I missed completely that this was not under a dome (duh), or a zoom lens, so there is only going to be a single gear that should line up with the port gear. Better yet.. just ignore this! gotta quick drinking at breakfast!

  4. Ding ding ding.

The port in question is the Sea and Sea custom flat port. It has a focus knob on it.

I believe there are some lenses where the gear mates with a gear/knob on the housing (16mm for example) but I don't think it works with the 100mm because the lens is too long.

    Cheers

  5. go to seaandsea.com, select your housing and click on system chart. This will give you a port chart

  6. Sea & Sea now has focus gears for two different Canon 100mm macro lenses.

the USM lens and the NON-USM lens.

The gear for the NON-USM lens is very long - about 4 inches and does mate with the gear in the housing.

the focus gear for the USM lens is very short - about 2 inches and ONLY mates with the gear on the custom flat port. it will not reach back to the gear in the body. It was made this way because the Back end of the USM 100mm macro lens is larger in diameter than the S&S gear diamater.

If you want to use the focus on the camera body, you will have to get a

NON-USM 100mm Macro Lens and the correct gear.

btw, I have one of the NON-USM gears that I can sell.
