First let me say that I am well aware that filing a patent does not guarantee a product will make it to the market but it is nice to dream.
Today Fstoppers.com has a post about a Canon US patent for an RF 8-24mm F/4L full frame fisheye and an RF 11-24mm F/4L.
The fisheye would be like an 8-15mm with a built-in 1.6X teleconverter to get you all the way to 24mm.
An RF 8-24mm f/4 design, which includes examples for an 8-28.
Wow.. that'd be amazing for underwater wide angle, if it's marketed. Pretty much a full-frame Tokina 10-17mm equivalent, and even more versatile on APS-C. It would more or less replace the need for a wet wide angle lens. 24mm on a 1.6x APS-C crop would be about a 40mm-equivalent fisheye lens, 180 degrees on the diagonal at the wide end to probably around 70-80 degrees at the narrow end.
This could be a "killer app" for underwater photography. Let us hope that Canon actually produces it!
This looks incredible to be honest!
Definitely a reason to hang off committing to a FF mirrorless system to see what brands can make use of this.
In case this lens will be offered in the future, this would be a big argument to go for a Canon system. Another good argument for Canon is the already existing 100mm macro lens with 1.4x magnification and build-in bokee adjustment...
Unfortunately, the Canon R5 Nauticam housing is extremely bulky and heavy, compared to the present Sony A7/A1 housings, and the chances that a Canon RF lens can ever be used on a Sony camera are close to zero (The Canon RF to Sony adapter needs to be only 2mm)...

There's more than one way to attack the problem - it's fairly easy to adapt a lot of Nauticam domes to certain other housing brands for example. Isotta housings for mirrorless seem to be a lot more compact. But we are probbaly getting ahead of ourselves here - we don't even know if they'll produce it - would be nice though if they did.
