Strobe recommendations for a D70 in Aquatica housing

  1. Strobe recommendations for a D70 in Aquatica housing

I have a new D70 going into an Aquatica housing (w/dual bulkhead connectors) and I'm stuck on trying to determine what strobes would work out best. I plan to initially buy one, and then add a second.

I currently have a 12-24 & 18-70mm nikon lens and plan to add a 10.5mm and either a 60mm or 105mm micro in the next several months.

Can you offer some suggestions and perhaps some pros & cons on strobe selection for the D70. I also realize that TTL is not available at this point in time.

    Thanks,

    Sieg

  2. I was a Sea and Sea YS90 user on my Tetra 5050 setup, and switched to the Inon Z220's for my Aquatica S2 rig.

I really like the combination of size and power, as well as the settings on the Inon strobes. Although many will tell you the focus lights will not work, if you speak to Blake at Aquatica, he should be able to wire up the bulkheads so they will work, albeit not exactly as designed.

I am also pretty sure this wiring arrangement will fool the camera into allowing you to use the higher sync speed capabilities of the D70 as well. This would be another question for Blake.

Cheers, and enjoy the new toy!

  3. Thanks Rich,

The Inon strobes sound really good, but I confess that it is the one brand that I know the least about so I guess I need to do a bit of research. How is their service & support?

Any other input from Inon users?

    Sieg

  4. Well, I cannot speak firsthand to Inons service and support, as I have not needed any. I can tell you however that if you purchase from Ryan at Reef Photo (previously known as Underwater Camera Pros) you will recieve EXCELLENT support from Ryan. You will also find Mark Rupert from Inon America to be a great resource as well.

I did have service issues in the past with Sea and Sea, and that was BEFORE they disolved the American support division...

I think you will find Inon great to deal with. Give Ryan a call for more info.

  5. I have the Inon strobes too and I like them a lot. They are almost powerful enough for all applications with an ISO200 camera like the D70. The strobes are small and compact but they do have a bit of weight underwater, as compared to some other strobes that are actually buoyant.

I second Rich's recommendation about Ryan and Mark R. Great guys!

    Cheers

    James

  6. I'll also throw a vote for Inon. I've had both the YS90dx (Still have one) and the Inons. I like the color temp. produced from the Inons and the fact they're smaller.

And like Richard, have had no problems with them and purchased from Ryan at Reef Photo.
