new dome port 300mm

2 posts
  1. Hello everybody. I intend to build a dome for my 300mm glass d7200 to take pictures in half water. I want to create this glass of the same thickness as the 230 or 250mm dome. Can anyone tell me what is the thickness of the glass of these dome ports? Anyone have any suggestions give me about the curvature of the dome? Does the 250 glass have a flange? thank you all.

  2. Are you saying you want to build a 300mm dome?  that is the dome is 300mm in diameter?  if you make it the same thickness as a 230mm dome, the depth rating is possibly less due to the larger diameter and greater force applied to the mounting surface by the larger area of the dome.

Dome curvature depends on what lens you want to place behind it.  A fisheye lens needs a hemisphere or close to it to properly position the lens entrance pupil, for a rectilinear wide can be a smaller segment of a larger diameter dome.

Any particular reason you want to use glass?  it will be significantly heavier.  The acrylic will be more buoyant which may make holding it at the surface easier.

You can buy custom domes from Matty Smith in 12, 17 and 18" diameter, the port is acrylic.  They are said to be optimised for split shots.
