Nikon 105mm or Sigma 150mm

  1. Nikon 105mm or Sigma 150mm

Ok, so I am going to get one of the two for Macro shots. What do you think about each? It seems the Nikon 105mm is pretty much standard equipment for most. Anyone know if the Sigma will fit in the Aquatica Flat port with the extension for the Nikon 105? Do you think the Sigma will be effective in AF or will you need to go manual focus??????

  2. Here's a rave review for the 105mm.

As for me, I have a Nikon D70 and knowing next to nothing about lenses I have stayed with Nikon lenses.

    Edited spelling.

  3. NWdiver, I for one is very interested in the Sigma 150 macro, in a very short time I will let you know the correct extension ring for this lens, but I assume NWdiver stand for north west diver, if that is the case you may want to rethink your choice, I dive a lot in the St Lawrence river system and would never even think of bringing this chunk of glass in a pea soup like our water plan. If I get the lens it will be strickly for shooting south, where the H2o is clear, my point is, if indeed you do most of your shoothing in the northwest, then get a 60mm Micro from Nikon, but if your lucky enough to have married a Venezualian girl and have a home over there for spending good wet time  , then by all mean look into the 150mm Sigma, I have played with the lens top side and have been impressed, next step is dropping it U/W, but you need a clear water collumn to get the most of this lens.

  4. I would go with the 105. The Sigma 150 is a very intriguing possibility but at this point it's an unknown quantity. It's generally not available yet so very few people have had the opportunity to use it in the field. The 105 is a proven workhorse.

I'm still waiting and hoping for Nikon to introduce a new AF-S macro but that's probably a ways off at this point

  5. If you're used to shooting a cropped sensor camera with the 105, the you upgrade to a full frame camera, the 150 will "act" the same, but with a bit more working distance.

Craig says this is an internally focusing lens, which means it doesn't get longer and shorter when you focus. This means it will be extremely easy to house. Just measure and select the correct extension ring for your aquatica. Of course you'll want a focus gear too...

  6. Great input from all. I do have the 60mm and it is a great lens. We do get 2-3 tropical trips in a year, and just a couple hours drive north the viz in B.C. can be +40'. I think the 105mm is the way to go. There are just those times you can not get close enough to a subject with the 60mm.
