  1. Using 1.4x, 2x and 3x TC on D10 and N10/Subal

Hi all, what brand TC are people using with the D100 and F100? I believe the Tamron is the best bet, but just getting some opinions. Also, what port rings do you use for these setups? Anyone been stacking TCs at all? Ive mostly used diopters so far. Used a diopter+TC combo a few times. This is for high magnification stuff (2:1and higher) I want to try out the TCs some more to maintain some distance.

    Thanks,

  2. 2:1 apparent or actual?

Assuming 2:1 actual, you can get that with a 105 + 2x or a 200mm with a 6T. Other combinations work. I think if you want really high mags you should start with the 200mm before stacking but that's just me. Remember that 2:1 looks like 3:1 on a D100. Going higher is really specialized. I don't see a reason to stack unless you need really high power.

I use the Tamron/Kenko with Nikon macros. They're the same with different packaging. The 1.4x needs a 20mm extention and the 2x needs a 45mm.

  3. Hey Cor-

Those pictures from Solomon are very nice..especially like the Pygmy and Leru Cut.

    Personally, I use a Kenko 2x TC on a 105 Nikon..

  4. Hi Cor.....thanks for posting your Sipadan and Solomon trip reports and photos.....both excellent

Both of these destinations are on our wish list :)

  5. I need to go a bit higher than 2x on a 105. Ive actually used a combination of D100 ,105mm ,+4diopter ,2x tc. (so a combo of tc and diopter). Im not quite sure of the magnification that gave me. I used this for some fishegg pictures. Im also looking at doing really high magnification abstracts. I realize this is quite specialized, and it wont be used often unless I like the results enough :)

You mentioned 45mm. I believe I used a 40mm ring though. Hmm.. anyone know exactly what port ring to use for a tamron 2x and a 105mm/FP-105 (with manual focus!)?

  6. You can certainly use the 200mm with a strong diopter and a 1.4x or even 2x converter. I think the least strength that works will be the easiest to use and provide the highest quality. A 2x 105mm is 210mm and you can get 2.5:1 or so with diopters. A 1.4x 200mm is about 280mm so the same diopter will yield more effective power with that combination. It will also be sharper and be about the same speed for focusing. The dimensions I gave are for the teleconverters themselves. Extension rings may not have to match exactly depending on the tolerance of your focus gears. Nexus gears are very tight and don't tolerate mismatches well.

  7. If I want to maintain the same working distance but increase the magnification to 2:1 I think a 105+2x is my best bet. (nikon 105 does 1:1 already). I used a closeup lens for this before, and I really disliked the decrease in distance.

Going beyond 2:1, combining a TC with a closeup lens is probably the best choice. if id stay with the 105, that would decrease the working distance. So i see your point in trying a 200mm. That way I can combine the 2xTC (or 1.4) with a close up lens while maintaining the distance equivalent to a 105. I dont care much about focusing speed as I do almost all macro work in manual.

Now i do know at least 1 photographer that stacks TCs, with stunning results. So I do think I'll try that out myself :(

Dammit, my bag keeps getting heavier :)
