  1. D70 in ikelite - what's needed?

    Hi All,

Bit of a noob here. Am currently using powershot A40, but bought a D70. Looking to order ikelite housing from BH so my parents can bring it over at christmas (I live in Australia).

    I know I need:

    6807 D-70 Housing

    5503.55 Lens Port

    3944.75 DS-125 Strobe TTL kit

I was also going to order extra O-rings and lubricant,

    but BH also qouted:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller...ku=10146&is=REG

One of those - is that correct?

Also do I need a manual controller? they did not qoute one?

    Thanks for your help,

  2. What's needed.

I have the D70, Ikelite Housing, Same port and strobe set up you listed. I have used the set up during a 10 day Cozumel trip and several local trips here in Minnesota for a total of about 50 dives.

As for your first question - Yes you need the close-up adapter mentioned by B&H. I have the B&W brand and I am happy with its performance. Just remember to put in on before your dive or the system will not work. Not that I have done that (twice).

The EV controller is helpful but you don't have to have it. The DS125 power can be manually set on the strobe. The EV controller just gives you better control by providing more power settings. One thing I liked is that since it mounts close to the camera, you don't have to reach far to the strobe to change power settings.

Also not necessary but nice are longer arms for the strobe. I found that I got better results with the strobe further away. I ended up using 11" Aquatica arms for the DS125 (Available at B&H as: "TLC Arm Section - 11" - Double Ball).

I also use the Aquatica Large Knob Ball-Joint Clamp. I felt that it gave me better control and holding power with the longer arms. It is also eaiser to control when diving with thick gloves.

Good luck with the system. I have been pretty happy with the the results so far.

  3. Hi Chris, thanks for the comments. I will check out the longer arms. It's something I can order easily enough and work without for a short while, so may pass on it initially.

So I gather you have have the TTL cord (that tells it to fire) and the extra manual controller for further dialing in?

Sorry, as I said bit of a noob atm :)

  4. I recommend going with the sync cord connection for simplicity, reliability, and because sometime soon Ikelite will be offering iTTL support for the D70 at which time you will probably want to upgrade your housing and if you do you will not need the manual controller.

For more on what I think and some links to pages that might be useful to you later, see the following page.

  5. Thanks, that is what I will do.

Also, when you say "upgrade housing" do you mean "replace housing" or "send back to Ikelite for ITTL upgrade"?

    Cheers

    Nathan

    Edit: Nice website too, thanks.

  6. If you include the +4 diopter B&H is quoting, you look ready to go. I opted for the manual controller as the DS50 doesn't have any intrinsic power settings on the strobe.

I also purchased a Hardigg Storm Case to carry all the gear around. The case has been excellent. http://stormcase.com/

I also forgot to mention that I have no regrets with my purchase.

    Cheers,

    Don

PS Could you throw an extra set of o's and lube in your order for Perth? ;-)

  7. I could do that no worries. Email me azonic@internode.on.net what you want.

But be qiuck as this stuff gets ordered real soon :)

  8. Thanks, that is what I will do.

Also, when you say "upgrade housing" do you mean "replace housing" or "send back to Ikelite for ITTL upgrade"?

You send it back for Ikelite to install the iTTL module :D

  9. Excellent

Will have order placed tomorrow 8) (or today USA)

BTW Karl - you occasionally post on diveoz, ive seen your photos through there - very nice :D

  10. Here is the list of everything I think I need (+ want :D)

My only question is about the TTL / Manual Controller - I am lost there. Can someone give me some advice please?

The dome port comes with a neoprene cover, so the extra isn't necessary.....if you buy the manual controller (I'd recommend it), you will need an extended stem in order to mount it between your handles and strobe arm.....I would recommend going to a SanDisk Ultra II 2gb card.....then you can dive all day and not open the back of your housing....we can fill a 1 gb card if we dive 3-4 dives a day

    Enjoy,

    Karl

I've tried to support DiveOz, but haven't gotten much response to my postings :?: :?:

  11. I bought the Ikelite housing and few more items one month ago at B&H.

If someone is going to pick it up from the store be sure to check that they have all the items you want in stock and asked them to keep it to you.

They usually don't have a big stock of the u/w items, my housing was the last there and so others items.

  12. Order was placed during the night, before I saw these responses.

Extra neoprene cover wont hurt and I can order the manual controller a bit later on perhaps (though if TTL is only q1 2005 I may just wait)?

  13. I've tried to support DiveOz, but haven't gotten much response to my postings :?: :?:

DiveOz seems a bit closed to a smaller group at times, and a lot of their discussion is more of a tech / rebreather level. They have a lot lurkers though and your posts are appreciated :D

I looked at a 2gb drive, it was still above the double the 1gb price so ill just wait for a while, most of my diving is 1 - 2 dives a day at the moment anyway.

    Cheers
