Sony 24mm f2.8 lens in Nauticam rig?

6 posts
  1. I have an A7C with kit lens and nauticam rig wet wide lens. Sony recently released a tiny 24mm f2.8 that is about the same size as the kit lens.

Is the lens compatible with my rig? Has anyone tried to use this lens on an A7C with Nauticam? Asking to see if I should buy this lens. Thanks

  2. What are you hoping to achieve by using the lens are you wanting to use it with the wet wide lens you have?  To clarify, by kit lens do you mean 28-60 lens with WWL-1?

  3. Assuming you're referring to SEL2860 as the kit lens, and SEL24F28G as the 24mm, both can be used underwater, but they use completely different port and wet lens setups. The 28-60mm is used with Flat Port 45 (part number 37165) and WWL-1/WWL-1B wet lens, which is made for 28mm focal length lenses behind it. The 24mm f/2.8 is used with Flat Port 23 (part number 37130) and WWL-C wet lens, which is made for 24mm focal length lenses behind it. If you try to use the 24mm f/2.8 with WWL-1, you will encounter significant vignetting, which, this being a prime lens, you can only crop away rather than zoom into.

What problem exactly are you trying to solve? A 24mm + WWL-C rig will be smaller and lighter than 28-60mm + WWL-1, giving you the more or less the same wide-angle capability, but giving up the zoom and macro potential.

  4. Yes the kit lens is the 28-60mm. Im currently using that lens with wet lens. The 24mm f2.8 is significantly sharper on shore. I was hopping to use the same port and wet lens for it but seems like i need a complete different port and wet lens set up. I will keep the kit lens for Uw and get the 20mm f1.8 for on shore photography instead. Thanks guys

  5. I don’t think we can assume that a lens that is sharper than another lens topside will be sharper than that other lens behind the WWL-1. We won’t know until someone tests it and reports.

Actually assuming the port design is appropriate a sharper lens is sharper also underwater
If you put the sharper lens behind a dome and the other behind a wet lens they are no longer comparable but the sharper lens remains sharper in the middle of the frame
I have had exactly this case with my MFT Panasonic 8-18mm rectilinear images with a dome at f/8 are way sharper than the small 14-42 with the wwl-1 in majority of the frame but i need to stop down to f/8 vs f/5.6
In the edges there is no comparison due to distortion
