Hi! For my Nikon Z6/Z7 in Sea&Sea housing I shoot with two YS-D1 strobes. I may have the opportunity to upgrade them to YS-D2 while selling my YS-D1 for a reasonable price.
I don't yet know if it's the YS-D2 or the YS-D2J. Is that easily visible on the strobes?
Apart from that I'm looking for subjective opinions from people who have used both YS-D1 and YS-D2. Is it a "meh" upgrade or more significant?

I can't see any major change in the strobe, the light seems the same, maybe better recycling and interface, though reliability is down compared to YS-D1 and the slave sensor seems less sensitive based upon posts on here troubleshooting triggering issues with LED strobe triggers. There is a review here comparing them https://www.uwphotographyguide.com/sea-sea-ys-d2-ys-d1-strobe-comparison
They are easy to tell apart, the YS-D2 is black while the YS-D2 is back to yellow with a BIG "J" on it. We'll see if anyone responds who has used both - I'd be inclined to be cautious given the experience we have seen on here of random failures and other issues and spend my money on something that gave me better light.
Thanks. Yeah, it turns out these are not the J version. They are also apparently unused, which is not necessarily a good thing, given all the problems I've read about. That means noone knows if this pair is good or not.
If your YS-D1 strobes are working, it may be best to stay with them. The YS-D2, black jacket, made in China are said to be trouble prone. while the YS-D2J, yellow jacket, made in Japan are more reliable (they have been replaced with the YS-D3J's which cost some $900 plus tax and shipping.
I replaced my YS-D2J's with Inon Z330's and am delighted with the results. As the Z330's have been discontinued, now is a good time to buy, while they are still available.
Kraken recently talked me out of buying a non-Japanese YS-D2J strobe. It seems like the Z330s are a pretty popular choice, but I ended up upgrading to the YS-D3 II.
btw--there is a YS-D2J for sale in classifieds if you're interested
