  1. The D2H has landed.

On my doorstep that is, thanks to the UPS man. At $1995, I thought this was a price too good to pass up. Even though I love my Fuji S2, my other interest in photography is youth sports (AAU and HS basketball) and the AF on the Fuji is just not up to the task. The D2H really is a beautifully crafted camera and I have no intention of housing it at the present time but I think Alex Mustard made a very valid point yesterday in pointing out that because the D2H and D2x share the same exact body I see future value as a backup.

My daughter Emma's openning home varsity HS game is tonight. I can hardly wait....hope the damn battery charges in time.

  2. What is it about the D2H that makes it better suited for sports photography over the Fuji S2?

  3. 8 fps, faster AF and super easy to use interface for starters.

  4. There are many rumblings and grumblings about a D2H replacement and the D2x body, etc. Larry, if you are lucky, Nikon will come out with two sensor/electronic upgrades for this camera:

    1) D2x upgrade. Perhaps you can get your camera upgraded to a D2x sensor.

    2) 8 megapixel sensor D2HS upgrade - get a higher megapixel sensor, to bring the camera in line with the Canon 1D MkII

If Nikon doesn't offer ANY upgrades for this camera, you still got a heck of a deal Larry - a really nice camera for $2,000. But I'm still hoping...

    Cheers

  5. That would be nice, if an upgrade was possible in the future but for most of my purposes 4MP is more than enough.

The D2h has a CAM2000 AF system. That's at least 2 generations beyond the CAM900 in the Fuji S2.

  6. Does the AF system only matter on non AF-S lenses? Or does it speed up those?

I do a lot of sports photography as well, and I guess I never really considered the body to be a major factor. I always looked more to the lens.

I think the AF system makes more of a difference for non-AFS lenses. If Nikon had a really fast (1.4) AFS lens I would get it, but they don't. Most of what I do is indoor available light and a 2.8 lens just won't allow a fast enough shutter speed.

You'll be giving up the high ISO performance of the S2. Doesn't that make a big difference for indoor lighting?

    Herb,

I guess I'll find out a little more about the D2H's high ISO performance tonight but my take on that is that I can clean-up a noisey image with Neat Image, etc. but an OOF image is useless. In a perfect photo world I would have a D2H body with a Fuji sensor and a Nikkor 85mm 1.2 AFS-VR lens.......where do I get one of those.

  10. Herbs answer will be: Get a 1dmkII with an 85 1.4 IS lens...:-)

    Cheers

  11. Yeh, you said what I was thinking. But no...it ain't gonna happen. No white lenses in this house!!
