Form factor stability in camera brands

4 posts
  1. As underwater shooter its bless a when a new and better camera fits in your current housing. Buying a small upgrade kit is no problem.
It happened with the OM5 that has exactly the same formfactor as my Olmypus M5-III. But in this case there's no improvement UW :-(

Form factor stability, even without guarantee, could be something to think of now some dsrl and mft owners are considering switching brands.
From some posts I get the impression that the Sony camera lines are more stable in form than those in other brands. Is that true?

  2. No, not really.  Usually with each new generation of cameras the camera body is changed enough that you will need a new housing.  You can identify some cameras that have maintained the same form factor over a couple of generations, but I would argue that that means a new form factor is MORE likely in the coming generation, not less likely.

  3. It happens once in a blue moon!

  4. Regarding the Sony cameras several housings will work with more than one body the issue is that manufactures can't predict the future so many fit the latest camera and can be retrofitted.

As far as how close the current Sony line of cameras match check the Sea & Sea MDX-aU housing just released that supports pretty much the entire Sony line by using modification kits. The housing has support for Sony A1, A9 II, A7 IV, A7R IV, A7s III and the latest release A7R V.
