Nauticam NA-A1 for Sony A1 how do you rig a focus light?

  1. Yesterday I took my macro rig to the pool. I am not a macro guy however the pool is very dark so I thought of boling on my M10 ball mount and attaching my focus light.

Well until i realised the housing has no M10 mount nor cold shoe mount I had to use my strobes

I see this a problem on night dives (I do not do many) or when you want to use the focus light as diving light

What's the solution other use? There is a cold shoe mount on the flat port (!) which so far I never thought of using and seem pretty unsafe you may have a focus light less at the end of the dive

  2. Simple: triple clamp on one the two 1" ball.

This is not a good solution as I move my arms a lot and the light would be hitting the housing or else

There are some mount point for tripod legs but this looks simply an oversight the camera has many knobs and they run out of space.

All other Sony housing have an M10 mount point

  4. No problem with this shoe mount (since I rightly fitted the metal in the groove  :-) ). Just check the rotating ring now and then.

  5. What's wrong with mounting a focus light on the port? This is a fairly common setup on many housings.

I've seen one photographer mount two float arms, one on each side, with the ends meeting in a triple clamp that also held an MF-1; you could do the same thing with a focus light - i.e. a triple clamp on each handle would hold a main strobe arm and an auxiliary arm, the two auxiliary arms meet in the middle forming a triangle, and your focus light sits at the apex of that triangle.

This looks interesting except it way down the port and the light is negative so it creates even more torque

I can think of at least 3 issues

    1. You need to put your hands over or around the he housing to turn on and off

    2. The light may cast a shadow as it is forward on the port in many situations

    3. There is torque making the nose of the rig even more negative

Triple clamp that holds a focus light on a bar...mmm

  8. This is an A1 housing and also works using the M10 mounts provided. I use the extra balls to mount lights, the sending unit for a ring flash and more.

Use a remote controlled light? Something like https://www.weefine.com/product/176.html

That's actually the exact opposite - if you mount it forward on the port and point it down, then it won't cast a shadow, as opposed to when it's mounted back on the camera body.

The shadow will be cast by the strobe you use to take the photo lol

Anyway I found the solution M5 mounting ball to replace the M5 screws that fix the handle bridge all sorted going to put two of those

Easy. Don’t use a separate focus light.. Use a dedicated macro strobe that has an integrated focus light. ;) This one can also take an optional snoot, designed with its integrated focus light in mind, making it the easiest snoot to aim I’ve ever seen.

My strobes have a focus light but this is not a solution for night dives, wreck penetration and any time am not directing the strobe at the subject

I got an M5 ball mount in my view the cleanest option

Well, for night dives, I guess so...
