Hawaiian eel or similar with red spots

Saw this a few days ago off the Lahaina coast in Maui.  Unfortunately not my best picture and he disappeared right after I took the first shot.  Any ideas what this is?

It doesn't line up with the mystery animal disappearing after one shot, but it looks very much like a mottled Linckia starfish. They come in a variety of colors and patterns, but I've seen several visually similar to your photo in west Maui

this is an arm of a starfish we have here in hawaii. the spotted linnkia (Linckia multifora)
