I thought this might be of some intereste to Wetpixel users. A Japanese S3 user has developed a program to extract the S and R images from an S3 RAW file:
I think this approach to generating an image is really excellent. I've done this "manually" with some of my RAW files to extend DR and it works great - you can get an extra 2 to 3 stops. Doing it in the camera makes it a lot easier.
Your thoughts?
James
It might be excellent, but a simple sensor that provides adequate range inherently would be better. Not saying that exists or what "adequate range" even is...
I'm glad people can extract the S and R data from the raw data. I'd like to see that breakdown on Reichman's test images. That would put an end to the questions about his test methodology.
I think the S3, like the Kodak, is a camera that people will have to learn how to get the most out of.
i have the S3 and i think it's a super camera, my other camera is a D100.
i don't do any sports or anything that requires a superfast AF and FPS rate, so at "12 mp" i thought it was worth a shot. i do mostly landscape and some other art type stuff and i am totally pleased with the results out of this camera. i've made stunning 13x19 prints out of my canon printer. my only problem is the RAW software and how totally vague and difficult it is to work.
Hi Tim and thanks for posting. Hang in there as I'm sure there are some bright minds working on other RAW converters for the S3 files (those folks at Adobe spring to mind).
I think it's just a matter of blending the two files together with the proper "portion" of each for the different DR modes.
